Back to School Anxiety

September 7, 2016

Its that time of year again! The new school term comes around so fast, and after the long days of summer, it can be a bit of a shock to the system!

For some kids, going back to school is exciting and the beginning of a new adventure, but for others, it is stressful and a source of anxiety for both child and parent.

FOR KIDS...

For children who are anxious about returning to school, there are some fantastic homeopathic remedies that can really smooth the way for a seamless transition to the new class and new environments. Combined with lots of reassurance, and time to talk about how they are feeling, these remedies can be a huge help to children and parents alike.

Arg nit 30– This is the remedy for anyone who feels their nerves in their tummy. Butterflies, tummy aches and a frequent need to go to the loo before leaving the house are strong indicators for this remedy. People needing this remedy get fidgety and restless as they don’t like waiting around for things to start.

Gelsemium 30 – This is a remedy for someone who is really frightened of what is to come. People who need this remedy find they feel weak and wobbly before an event they are worried about,  their legs turn to jelly, and they may forget what they are supposed to say or do.

Lycopodium 30 – This is the remedy for people who are lacking in confidence. They might try to cover their anxiety with bravado, but underneath they really want to do well.  The fear of doing new things drives them to prepare well in advance, and they don’t want to be alone, but they can get irritable and cross in their nervous state.

Pulsatilla 30 – This is a wonderful remedy for children, who are anxious about new situations. They will worry about leaving mum or dad, and will worry about making new friends. They can become very clingy and tearful when nervous and will need lots of reassurance.

The remedies can be bought from health food shops or Helios Pharmacy, and given morning and evening, or pop a few in a water bottle so they dissolve and are sipped throughout the day...

FOR MUM....

Any of these remedies are useful for children going back to school, but what about us mums? It can be very stressful for mums, and particularly when it's a milestone transition such as starting school for the first time, or moving on to secondary school! I remember being so upset when my youngest went off to primary school, I was so tearful and anxious about my 'baby' going off to 'big school'!

If you are feeling emotional like I was, then try some Ignatia 30, it is fantastic for helping to get a handle on these emotional days, so that the kids see the happy positive mum, rather than the sad, tearful one!

If you or your child suffer from anxiety that is more than the normal 'back to school' jitters, I would strongly recommend looking into how homeopathy might help in the longer term.

One young patient of mine had been out of school for some months due to anxiety, and over a period of a 2-3 sessions we were able to lower her anxiety so that she was able to return to school and happily rejoin her classmates.

It really can make a huge difference. Do get in touch if you'd like to know more by clicking here.
