Sailing through the Menopause with Homeopathy

The menopause is a phase of life that

inspires dread for many women.

Often, women have heard horror stories of hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, irritability and more.

But it doesn't have to be this way!

Some women are lucky enough to sail through the menopause, but for those who need a little extra help, homeopathy is a brilliant way to ease the symptoms and experience the menopause in a more positive light.

What is menopause, exactly? Menopause is the point at which you have your last period. It happens because your ovaries have run out of eggs, so with no ovulation occuring, the levels of hormones change. The resulting imbalance of hormones can take time to settle, and in the meantime, the symptoms associated with menopause may kick in.

The average age for menopause is 51, though this can vary by several years from woman to woman.

Perimenopause refers to the period of a few years before your last period, and it is often when women notice changes to their menstrual cycle as the body starts to experience changes in hormone levels.

Post menopause is the years after your last period when the hormones begin to settle down to a new balance and any symptoms should subside and disappear.

Symptoms during the menopausal period can include hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, anxiety, depression, loss of libido, erratic and changeable periods, weight gain and hair loss.

Homeopathy can help with all of these symptoms by helping to balance the hormones and easing the transition from one phase of life to the next.

These are the remedies I use most often for menopausal symptoms:

Sepia - this is a remedy for women who are worn out and irritable. The strain of looking after everyone else results in feelings of resentment, indifference to family and wanting to escape responsibilities. Physically, heavy periods with a dragging sensation and back ache, hot flushes, especially at night, and hair loss, are all symptoms that relate to this remedy.

Lachesis - Irritability is the big symptom of this remedy. Frequent hot flushes, often accompanied by headaches are common. Feeling weary but unable to sleep from night sweats, and an aversion to any tight clothing around the waist and neck also indicate this remedy.

Ignatia - this is a remedy for tearfulness and depression during menopause. It is especially helpful when a woman feels sadness, either that her fertile years are ending, or when menopause coincides with children becoming independent or leaving home.

Pulsatilla - mood swings are typical here. Sadness, anxiety and weepiness may alternate with forced cheefulness and excitability. Feeling overwhelmed when in warm rooms with lots of people, and feeling much better in the fresh air are symptoms for Pulsatilla. Physically, feeling very chilly between hot flushes is common, as are pre-mensrual headaches and back aches. Those needing Pulsatilla can feel very emotionlly up and down, often without there being any particular reason apparent.

There are many other homeopathic remedies that are useful during the menopause, and seeing a homeopath is often really helpful as it's often easier for someone else to see what you really need.
